DFS, which has been at Thorp Arch Retail Park for 32 years, is moving its warehousing to newly-refurbished Unit 521 to serve its two retail outlets at Thorp Arch Retail Park, The Dining Room Centre and Suite Centre, for which it has recently taken a new 15-year lease.

Unit 521 has been re-furbished with a £600,000 investment by estate owner, Rockspring Hanover Property Unit Trust, to create a new 15,000 sq ft warehousing facility and secure yard.  The project was overseen by on-site estate management company, Wharfedale Property Management Ltd.

TRANSFORMED: These two pictures show how the £600,000 refurbishment has transformed Unit 521 at Thorp Arch Estate, near Wetherby, which has become warehousing for national furniture giant DFS.

The refurbishment of the unit, originally built in 1941 as part of a Royal Ordnance factory, was project managed by York-based building surveyors and architects, the LHL Group and carried out by Wm Aneley, York. The contract included demolishing neighbouring, Unit 525, to create the adjoining yard.

An environmental feature of the warehouse refurbishment is two hot-air blowers, linked to the roller-shutter doors, so that they operate only when the doors are closed which reduces energy use and operational costs.

Barry Dennis, commercial director at DFS, Darley Dale, Derbyshire, which has 79 stores nationwide, including five in Yorkshire, says: "The newly-refurbished warehouse unit at Thorp Arch Estate replaces an older one we used on the estate which remains a good location for us with an established and popular retail park."

Wharfedale Property Management director, Tim Munns, says: "Thorp Arch Estate remains a sought-after business location in the current economic climate and we are very pleased that DFS has extended its commitment and presence here."

The two million sq ft Thorp Arch Estate is  the base for a diverse range of more than 150 businesses, from start-ups to large Plcs, operating in local, national and international markets and employing more than 2,500 people. Thorp Arch Retail Park, which forms part of the estate, was the first out-of-town shopping centre in the country when it opened in 1959 and is complemented by a variety of leisure facilities
